Don't lose yourself in nostalgia

I already deleted the playlist, so why listen to the old sad songs again? From now on, only songs like THIS:

Sometimes, I wonder...

... do you ever think of me too?

The End of Traditions...

In sad news today, Yale's very own, delicious, original Yankee Doodle closes its doors, another casualty of rising rents and health-conscious America. In their typical understated fashion, the owners put up this sign:

RIP Doodle. I will always remember you and your remarkably greasy but heavenly food fondly.

Zoo's Response is "Shouldn't have done that"??

I can't say I know a lot about this case ("Escaped Tiger at San Francisco Zoo Kills"), but it seems to be kind of wrong to put people who were attacked by an escaped tiger under criminal investigation. "Police are looking into whether the brothers provoked the tiger before it attacked"??? Who the fuck cares?? That's no excuse for making your tiger fence too freakin' low. Little children who don't know any better provoke animals at the zoo every single day. What are you going to tell the parents of dead children who got attacked by "justifiably angry" animals? "Too bad, you should've taught your kid some manners."???

Atonement

Usually, during winter break, I go home and watch lots of movies. However, this season, the movie urge didn't really hit me, so it was something of an oddity when Lydia convinced me to watch "Atonement" with her, Tracey, and Michelle last night. First, I must give Lydia props for talking me out of "I Am Legend." I'm sure it's also good, and yes, I do still want to see it, but "Atonement" was truly excellent. I won't spoil the plot for you, since honestly, there isn't THAT much of a plot, but suffice to say, if you haven't seen it, you should. (At the very least, you can ogle both James McAvoy AND Keira Knightly. Mere mortals shouldn't ask for too much in life.)

The funny thing is, I got sort of down after watching the movie. This isn't an indictment of the movie. Matter of fact, it's praise because nothing's been able to make me feel that sort of emotion since falling in (and out of) love in grade school. Come to think of it, maybe that's why, because my concept of love in grade school was all very tragic, and this was definitely a tragi-romance. It's a very girlish notion of fate and the universe, and one that I miss from time to time. As an adult, I realize that I would be unhappy with someone who is insensitive, absent, or zeitgeist, but Girl Lulu lives on, battling away those white horses, wanting someone dark, intense, and likely to cause mucho heartbreak. It's an epic battle, and the endgame is default asexuality.

Women out there, you know what I mean, right? You want that scene in the library (watch the movie, you'll know what I mean). You want that lover who'll tug at your heartstrings simply because he's not there, because the world is as cruel ugly place and the only beautiful thing is your love. We all want that opportunity to feel lovesick one moment, and screaming "WHY WHY WHY??" on top of a cliff the next.

Hmm. That's a bit extreme, but I'm quite sure I'm not the only one. Anyways, go watch "Atonement" and feel all of 16 years old again, like me.

NYC

I didn't actually take any pictures in New York, but for the record, it was an AMAZING trip. To all my old friends: I am so glad I got to see you all again. To my med school compadres: You all are rockstars.

Now to plan the next road trip...
